Ultimate Buying Guide: How to Choose the Best Kent Water Purifier

Kent is undoubtedly one of the most recognized and trusted water purifier brands in India. Their introduction of the “Mineral RO™” technology changed the landscape of home water purification by solving a major flaw in traditional RO systems: the complete removal of essential minerals. However, with so many models in the Kent lineup, selecting the right one can be overwhelming. Here is a deep dive into everything you need to know.

1. Understanding Kent’s Mineral RO™ Technology

Standard RO (Reverse Osmosis) purifiers are extremely effective at removing dissolved impurities, heavy metals, and salts. However, they are often too effective—they strip the water of essential natural minerals like calcium and magnesium, resulting in acidic, “dead” water.

Kent’s patented Mineral RO™ technology solves this by incorporating a TDS Controller. The system splits the incoming water: one portion goes through the RO membrane, while the other goes through a UF (Ultrafiltration) membrane. The UF membrane allows dissolved minerals to pass through while blocking bacteria and cysts. By intelligently mixing the RO and UF purified water, Kent ensures that your drinking water is 100% safe while retaining optimal mineral levels and maintaining a healthy pH balance.

2. Matching the Purifier to Your Water Source

The most critical factor in choosing any water purifier is your source water.

Borewell / Groundwater (High TDS): If your water source is a borewell or tanker, and your TDS is above 500 ppm (parts per million), you absolutely need an RO+UV+UF system. Kent’s flagship models, like the Kent Grand+ or Kent Supreme, are built with heavy-duty RO membranes capable of handling high TDS loads without clogging prematurely.
Municipal / Corporation Water (Low TDS): If you receive treated municipal water with a TDS below 200 ppm, an RO system might be overkill and lead to unnecessary water wastage. In this case, a Kent UV+UF purifier is sufficient. It will effectively kill bacteria and viruses (via UV) and remove suspended impurities (via UF) without altering the natural mineral content of the water.

3. The Importance of Zero Water Wastage

One of the biggest criticisms of traditional RO purifiers is water wastage. Older systems could waste up to 3 liters of water for every 1 liter of purified water produced. Kent has addressed this environmental concern with their Zero Water Wastage Technology.

Selected Kent models feature an internal pump that recirculates the rejected water back to your overhead tank. This ensures that no water goes down the drain, making it a highly eco-friendly choice for environmentally conscious households. If water conservation is a priority for you, specifically look for Kent models advertising this feature.

4. Advanced Features: Copper & Alkaline

Recent trends in health and wellness have influenced water purification technology. Kent now offers models with specialized post-carbon filters:

Active Copper Enrichment: Copper has been used traditionally in India for storing water due to its antimicrobial properties and health benefits (aiding digestion and immunity). Kent’s copper models infuse the right amount of copper ions into the purified water.
Alkaline Enhancers: These filters help increase the pH level of the RO water, making it alkaline (pH 8.0 or higher). Alkaline water is believed to help neutralize acidity in the body and improve hydration.

5. Annual Maintenance Cost (AMC) Considerations

When buying a Kent purifier, you must factor in the ongoing maintenance costs. The RO membrane, carbon filters, sediment filters, and UV lamps need periodic replacement to ensure safe drinking water.

Typically, pre-filters need replacement every 3-6 months.
RO membranes and carbon filters usually last 12-18 months depending on usage and input water quality.
Kent’s comprehensive AMC plans can range from ₹2,000 to ₹3,500 annually. It is highly recommended to opt for the official AMC to ensure genuine spare parts and expert servicing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I change the filters in my Kent RO?

Generally, the pre-filter should be replaced every 3 to 6 months depending on the sediment level in your water. The main RO membrane, carbon filters, and UF filters typically require replacement every 12 to 18 months. However, this heavily depends on your daily water consumption and the initial quality of your input water. Many modern Kent models feature a filter change alarm to notify you exactly when a replacement is due.

Is the TDS controller actually useful?

Yes, it is highly beneficial. Without a TDS controller, an RO membrane can reduce the TDS level to near zero, stripping away essential minerals and making the water taste flat or acidic. The TDS controller allows a small amount of UF-purified water to mix with the RO-purified water, ensuring the final output retains healthy natural minerals and has a pleasant, sweet taste.

Can Kent RO purifiers work without electricity?

No, Kent RO purifiers require a continuous electricity supply to operate the booster pump (which pushes water through the dense RO membrane) and the UV lamp. However, once the storage tank (usually 8-10 liters) is full, you can dispense the stored purified water even during a power cut. Kent does offer gravity-based UF purifiers (like Kent Gold) that operate without electricity, but these are only suitable for low-TDS municipal water.

Buying Guide: How to Choose the Right Water Purifier

Choosing the best water purifier depends heavily on the quality of your source water. Here are the most critical factors to consider:

1. Test Your Water Source (TDS Level)

Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) determines which purification technology you need:

Low TDS (below 200 ppm): Typically found in municipal water. A UV + UF purifier is sufficient to kill bacteria and remove cysts without stripping essential minerals.
High TDS (above 200 ppm): Found in borewell, tanker, or mixed sources. You absolutely need an RO (Reverse Osmosis) purifier to remove heavy metals and excess salts.

2. Multi-Stage Purification (RO+UV+UF+MTDS)

Modern purifiers combine multiple technologies. RO removes dissolved impurities, UV kills microorganisms, and UF removes suspended particles. If you use RO, ensure it has a TDS Controller (MTDS) or Mineralizer to add essential minerals back into the water.
